French actress Juliette Binoche was the centre of attention at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where she received the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. Introduced by the festival's artistic director Karel Och with the words "an icon is here", she also presented her directorial debut, "In-I in Motion", a documentary chronicling her dance-theatre collaboration with British dancer-choreographer Akram Khan. The film matters both as a milestone in Binoche's career and as an unusually raw portrait of two established artists working outside their comfort zones.

The documentary is drawn wholly from rehearsal footage and live recordings of the stage show, with no voiceover or interviews, a choice Binoche made so that audiences could form their own responses and feel like "creators" themselves. She recounted how the project began by chance in London and grew into a production that toured 120 times, with Robert Redford, after seeing the show, urging her to turn it into a film. During a Variety-moderated masterclass, Binoche also reflected on her wider career — from "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and "Three Colors: Blue" to her Oscar-winning role in "The English Patient" — her scepticism about awards, her championing of European cinema as president of the European Film Academy, and the importance of saying "no". She next shoots "Thank You Charlotte" with Turkish filmmaker Berkun Oya, though she joked that she would first like to try taking a holiday.
