Scooby-Doo is a mystery franchise that began as an animated television programme in 1969. It usually follows four teenagers and their dog, Scooby-Doo, as they investigate apparently supernatural events that often turn out to have ordinary explanations.
The main group includes Shaggy, Scooby’s easily frightened best friend; Daphne, Velma and Fred, who each play a part in solving the mysteries. The characters have appeared in many cartoons, films, games and live-action versions over several decades.
Netflix’s new series is set before the group becomes the familiar crime-solving team. It uses a summer-camp setting to show how the young characters first become involved in a mystery together.

André 3000 and Cathy Moriarty have been cast in recurring roles in Netflix’s forthcoming live-action series, Scooby-Doo: Origins, according to reports by Deadline and Billboard. The programme is filming in Atlanta and is scheduled for a global Netflix release in 2027. Neither report identifies the characters the two performers will play.
The series is presented as an origin story for the Mystery Inc. group. Its plot begins during the friends’ final summer at camp, when Shaggy and Daphne become involved in a case connected to a lost Great Dane puppy and an apparent supernatural killing. Velma and Fred then join the investigation, which is said to uncover secrets affecting all four teenagers.
Mckenna Grace has been cast as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg are showrunners, writers and executive producers. Toby Haynes is also an executive producer and will direct the opening episode; Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television are behind the project.
The casting marks another connection between André Benjamin and the franchise. As part of OutKast, he and Big Boi worked with Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown on ‘Land of a Million Drums’ for the 2002 Scooby-Doo film soundtrack. Benjamin has also acted in films including Jimi: All Is by My Side, while Moriarty is known for roles in Raging Bull and Casper. Billboard additionally notes Benjamin’s work beyond rap, including his animated series Class of 3000 and recent instrumental releases.
Where outlets differ
Deadline characterises the programme as the second live-action interpretation of the Hanna-Barbera property after the 2002 film, while Billboard calls it a reimagining of that film and foregrounds André 3000’s musical and animation career.
Deadline provides the fuller premise, production-credit list and a longer supporting cast list, and reports internal enthusiasm for the series. Billboard focuses more on the confirmation from Benjamin’s representatives, the UK chart performance of ‘Land of a Million Drums’, and his post-OutKast projects.
Both outlets agree that Benjamin and Moriarty will recur and that their roles have not been disclosed; Billboard expressly describes both roles as unknown, whereas Deadline simply does not name their characters.
