Bernardo Bertolucci's final screenplay, "The Echo Chamber," will finally be brought to the screen nearly eight years after his death, premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival in September under director Andrea Pallaoro. Pallaoro worked closely with Bertolucci's original co-writers, Ilaria Bernardini and Ludovica Rampoldi, to adapt the story of love, longing and obsession while making the material his own rather than simply imitating Bertolucci's style, marking a notable departure for a director who had previously written all three of his own features.

The film stars Alicia Vikander as physiotherapist Anne and Luca Marinelli as Leo, a music producer battling addiction, whose lives become entangled in an unlikely love affair, with Susan Sarandon playing veteran singer Ava, who influences Leo through her own stories of love and life. The Italian-Belgian production is led by Rome-based Indigo Film, which acquired the screenplay rights after Bertolucci's death, alongside Rai Cinema and Versus Production, with 01 Distribution releasing the film in Italy on 10 September and Paradise City and UTA Independent Film Group handling international and North American sales respectively.
