Android Auto YouTube Limitations: Is It Worth Using In The Car?

Engadget · 2 hours ago

Google plans to expand YouTube support in Android Auto later this year, allowing HD video playback at up to 60 frames per second while a vehicle is parked and switching automatically to audio when driving begins. The change matters because Android Auto currently offers only a limited audio-based YouTube experience, leaving users unable to watch content on their car display even when stationary.

At present, users can select YouTube videos on their phones and listen through Android Auto while driving, but controls and features are restricted; reports indicate play, pause and skip functions require YouTube Premium or Premium Lite, and seeking within videos is unavailable. Some manufacturers, including GM, already offer fuller parked-video support in certain vehicles, while Google has not given a release date or confirmed whether Premium Lite will qualify for the forthcoming driving audio feature.

  • Android Auto will gain parked YouTube video playback later this year.
  • Driving will remain audio-only for safety reasons.
  • Current YouTube controls are limited and may require a paid subscription.
