Monbiot notes that nearly half of Burnham's own leadership campaign funding came from Lord Sainsbury, a major Starmer donor, and argues that the official explanation—trade union objections—understates the greater role of large private donors, while also criticising union funding as skewing Labour policy towards unionised sectors.
