Advisers in Downing Street are reportedly urging Prime Minister Andy Burnham to consider calling an early general election next spring, believing it could improve Labour’s chances of retaining power. The proposal reflects concern that Labour might remain the largest party but fall well short of a majority, forcing it to seek support from other parties.

A YouGov MRP poll of almost 17,000 people projected Labour winning 241 seats, Conservatives 130 and Reform UK 123, with the latter two unable to form a majority together. The poll also forecast 71 Liberal Democrat, 40 SNP, 15 Plaid Cymru and nine Green seats; however, an early election is reportedly conditional on improvements in the Middle East situation, living costs and energy prices, while Reform has faced internal controversies and declining support.
