## Key points

- A grieving mother offered compassion to the driver charged over her son’s death.
- The newlywed couple died in a November 2025 Oregon highway crash.
- Kumar has returned to Oregon custody to face state charges.

## Summary

Elizabeth Carter, whose son and daughter-in-law were killed in an Oregon crash, spoke to the truck driver charged in their deaths and said she prayed for him and his family. Her message of compassion came as federal agents returned Rajinder Kumar to Oregon custody to face state prosecution.

Prosecutors accuse Kumar, 32, of jackknifing his lorry across both lanes of U.S. Highway 20 on 24 November 2025; William Micah Carter, 25, and Jennifer Lynn Lower, 24, died when their car struck it, 16 days after their wedding. Kumar has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree manslaughter and three counts of reckless endangerment. He entered the US unlawfully in 2022, according to court and immigration records, and later received work authorisation and a California commercial driving licence; deportation proceedings are paused while the state case proceeds.
