An inquest into the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe has heard that the precise medical cause of her death has yet to be established, following a post-mortem examination. Widdecombe, 78, was found dead with "visible injuries" at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor, Devon, on 9 July, after an employee carried out a welfare check when she became uncontactable. A man has since been charged with her murder, and the case is proceeding through the criminal justice system alongside the coroner's inquiry.

The brief hearing at Exeter Coroner's Court was opened by Philip Spinney, senior coroner for Devon, Plymouth and Torbay, who confirmed emergency services declared Widdecombe dead at the scene. Joshua Kerry, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was arrested on suspicion of murder on 11 July and later also arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences, though he has not been charged with the latter. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with murder, having been remanded in custody.
