Anna Louizos, the three-time Tony-nominated Broadway scenic designer behind productions including *Avenue Q* and *In the Heights*, has died in New York City aged 69. Her death, caused by multiple myeloma after a series of health problems linked to a riding accident in Greece last year, marks the loss of a designer whose sets helped define several major modern musicals.

Born in California in 1957, Louizos moved to New York to study acting before specialising in scenic design at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She received Tony nominations for *High Fidelity* (2006), *In the Heights* (2008) and *The Mystery of Edwin Drood* (2012), while her *Avenue Q* city-block set travelled with the production to the West End, Las Vegas and touring versions. Lin-Manuel Miranda praised her *In the Heights* design for making Washington Heights residents feel their own home had been placed on stage; Louizos also founded the Broadway Design Exchange in 2011.
