Anna Louizos, the three-time Tony-nominated scenic designer behind Broadway productions including Avenue Q, In the Heights and School of Rock, has died aged 69. Her work shaped the visual identity of major musicals for nearly 25 years, with colleagues praising her ability to create detailed, emotionally recognisable stage worlds.

Louizos died in New York on Tuesday from multiple myeloma after health problems that began following a horse-riding accident in Greece last year, according to her wife, producer Robyn Goodman. She received Tony nominations for High Fidelity, In the Heights and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and an Emmy nomination as art director for the 1993 Tony Awards broadcast; Lin-Manuel Miranda credited her In the Heights set with making Washington Heights residents feel their home had been faithfully represented.
