## Key points

- Notre Dame defeated top-ranked Miami 31-24.
- CJ Carr threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns.
- A disputed late catch call ended Miami’s comeback chance.

## Summary

Fourth-ranked Notre Dame beat top-ranked Miami 31-24, handing the Hurricanes their first defeat and reshaping the college football playoff race. The Irish led by 21 points before holding off a late comeback, avenging a loss to Miami last season that had helped keep them out of the playoff.

Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns, while Miami’s Darian Mensah threw three touchdown passes. Miami’s Elija Lofton appeared to catch a late fourth-down touchdown, but officials ruled he had not completed the catch; Notre Dame took over and ran down the clock. Both teams are now 8-1, while Utah and UCLA are the only unbeaten teams among the top-tier Football Bowl Subdivision teams, at 9-0.
