Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has strongly defended his late mother after One Nation leader Pauline Hanson renewed criticism of the length of time she spent living in public housing. Speaking at a press conference at Kirribilli House, Albanese rejected Hanson's characterisation of his upbringing, insisting he had never complained about growing up in public housing and remained proud of both his community and his mother.

Hanson's remarks, made earlier on The Karl Stefanovic Show, argued that public housing should be time-limited rather than occupied for decades, referencing Albanese's account of his mother, Maryanne Ellery, living in the same house for 65 years. Albanese countered by describing his mother's story as one of courage rather than privilege, noting she chose in 1963 to raise him as a single parent out of wedlock, and praised her as compassionate, generous and kind rather than "nasty".
