A trial has heard that the driver of a car carrying boxer Anthony Joshua was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it crashed in Nigeria last December, killing two members of Joshua's team. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, denies charges including causing death by dangerous driving, while a second defendant, lorry driver Abubakar Adamu, 35, denies obstructing traffic. The case matters because it has drawn scrutiny to the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two men close to one of boxing's biggest names, with Joshua himself present as a passenger.

The court heard the group were travelling to visit Joshua's father in Ogun State, near Lagos, when Kayode lost control of his Lexus SUV while overtaking a moving truck and collided with a parked lorry, killing personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami. A police inspector told the court that by the time officers arrived both vehicles had been removed, though crash debris and spilled soya beans were found, along with a logbook, painkillers and an energy drink in the Lexus. Police have not yet taken a statement from Joshua, with an officer saying they had no way to contact him; the trial has been adjourned until 10 September.
