Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante said Accept’s 1983 track ‘Fast As A Shark’ inspired him to learn fast double-bass drumming, helping him secure his place in Anthrax during an early audition. He also reiterated his view that his work with Stormtroopers Of Death helped establish the blast beat later associated with extreme metal and hardcore.

Benante said he taught himself double-kick technique after hearing Motörhead, Judas Priest and especially Accept, whose song he considered the fastest example at the time. He credited S.O.D. bassist Danny Lilker with suggesting the rapid one-foot pattern used on the 1985 song ‘Milk’; Benante believes it was among the earliest recorded examples of the blast beat, although he noted D.R.I. had used something similar.
