## Key points

- Joey Belladonna sang the US anthem before Seahawks-Bears.
- Some fans criticised his performance on social media.
- He says stadium anthem performances can feel unnerving.

## Summary

Anthrax singer Joey Belladonna performed the US national anthem before the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears game, drawing harsh criticism from some NFL fans online. The reaction highlights how a rendition at a major sporting event can reach an audience unfamiliar with the singer or his band.

Belladonna sang at Lumen Field on 2 November before about 69,000 fans, during ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast. He has performed the anthem at other sporting events and has said the solo performance feels tense because the stadium goes quiet and there is no fixed key; he aims to keep it traditional. Belladonna was Anthrax’s singer from 1984 to 1992 and rejoined in 2010.
