Anthropic unveils Claude Fable 5.1 with lower agentic costs
Anthropic has released two new AI models, Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, aiming to address customer complaints about pricing, data privacy and overly cautious content restrictions. The company says Fable 5.1 outperforms its predecessor while costing roughly 25% less on average and up to 45% less for complex agentic tasks, thanks to cheaper pricing for previously cached data. Early testers, including executives at Every and Box, have praised the model's coding ability, efficiency and more natural conversational tone.
Anthropic also detailed improvements to safety and privacy features. Fable 5.1 has "more precise safeguards" that are less likely to block basic biology queries than before, though Mythos 5.1 retains the same restrictions as its predecessor. New Enterprise Frontier Safeguards will let corporate customers store data on their own cloud servers rather than Anthropic's, with rollout expected later this autumn. Fable 5.1 can now also be used to identify software vulnerabilities, though more sensitive cybersecurity tasks like penetration testing will still be routed to Anthropic's Opus models. Fable 5.1 is available on all platforms now, while Mythos 5.1 is currently limited to participants in Anthropic's Project Glasswing.

They might also question the wisdom of maintaining a separate, more permissive model available only to a select group of invited testers, arguing that opaque, invitation-only access to a less-restricted AI creates inconsistent standards and undermines public accountability over who can use more capable, less guarded tools.
