Actor Danny Dyer has become embroiled in a public exchange with Prime Minister Andy Burnham after making critical remarks about his leadership at a water industry protest in Kent. Dyer questioned Burnham's democratic mandate, saying he did not know who the PM was or who had voted for him, and criticised successive prime ministers in expletive-laden language. Burnham assumed office in July following an internal Labour party coup against Keir Starmer, after winning the Makerfield by-election. His election as leader by Westminster MPs proceeded without a broader party membership vote, with critics dubbing it a "stitch-up" due to the absence of competing candidates. Despite previously demanding that the Conservatives call a general election when they changed leaders in power, Burnham has resisted similar calls for a snap election to secure his own public mandate. Dyer attended the protest alongside his daughter and singer Becky Hill to support calls for water industry nationalisation, whilst criticising the quality of British waters.
