## Key points

- Ocasio-Cortez’s allies say Mamdani gets more leeway from progressives.
- Mamdani’s support has grown despite criticism from some on the left.
- The two Democrats have also faced scrutiny over their public conduct.

## Summary

Allies of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez say Zohran Mamdani has received more patience and deference from progressive activists than she did, reviving frustration over how the two rising New York Democrats are treated. The contrast matters because Ocasio-Cortez faced intense scrutiny after her 2018 election, while Mamdani’s rapid rise has drawn support across parts of the left.

Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, became mayor with backing from progressive and pro-Palestinian groups, though some supporters have criticised his meetings with President Donald Trump. He said he met Trump to pursue outcomes for New York City; the article reports he did not persuade Trump to release Oscar Bergal, whom ICE shot in Manhattan. Polling cited by the article finds Mamdani more popular than Ocasio-Cortez, while both have also faced criticism over laughing during a 9/11 memorial ceremony.
