Apple is developing a smart display device, internally codenamed J490, that is currently undergoing extensive testing in employees' homes and may launch later this year. This marks Apple's long-awaited entry into the smart display market, a segment dominated by Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub, and represents a significant shift as the device would be built around Siri AI functionality. The device has been rumoured since 2022 but was delayed by technical issues related to Apple Intelligence.

The device would feature a form factor similar to a miniaturised Echo Show or a wall-mounted half HomePod Mini, with an advanced display, camera, microphones and Wi-Fi connectivity. It would employ facial recognition to identify users and personalise content including apps, notes, calendar appointments, news, music and podcasts. The interface would blend elements of iOS, tvOS and watchOS, and Siri integration would enable users to perform tasks across apps and accounts. Originally scheduled for 2024, there remains no official launch date, though recent reports suggest a possible arrival before the end of 2026.
