## Key points

- Trump ordered Lake Ontario renamed "Lake America" amid Canada trade tensions
- Google Maps already shows the new name to US users
- Apple reportedly lobbied directly by Trump to follow suit
- Canada's PM Carney has firmly rejected the renaming

## Summary

Apple is reportedly poised to follow Google in renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for US users of its maps app, after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change the lake's name amid an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Trump had personally lobbied Apple to make the switch, following a similar renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" last year, and that the change is likely to appear soon.

Burgum said the US Geological Survey had already updated its official names database to reflect the change, prompting several tech platforms to follow suit. Google confirmed that US users of Google Maps now see "Lake America", while Canadian users still see "Lake Ontario", and users elsewhere are shown both names. The move has drawn mockery, including from NFL broadcaster Al Michaels during a game near the lake, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change, noting the name predates both nations by over 400 years and insisting Canadians will continue calling it Lake Ontario.
