Polygon distinguishes Apple TV’s Dark Matter from the similarly named Canadian sci-fi series that ran from 2015 to 2017. The earlier show follows six amnesiac criminals who awaken aboard a spaceship, and its mix of space opera, mystery and outlaw drama makes it a worthwhile cult classic despite becoming increasingly difficult to find.

The series begins with the strangers naming themselves One through Six while investigating their identities and violent pasts. Although it resembles Firefly, it is darker and driven more by its central mystery; a multiverse storyline complicates the second season, while the third raises the stakes before Syfy cancelled the show, leaving it on a major cliffhanger after reportedly dropping it for financial reasons.
