Argentina’s Paredes banned for 10 games after World Cup clashes

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has been banned for 10 matches by FIFA's disciplinary committee following his involvement in on-field clashes after the 2026 World Cup final, which Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain. Team-mate Nahuel Molina received a seven-match ban, while Argentina must play their next two home matches at 50% capacity, with one of those matches suspended. The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) was also fined for breaches including non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct and discriminatory chants by supporters, reflecting wider disciplinary fallout from the tournament beyond the final itself.

Paredes and Molina must each pay fines of $90,000 (£66,000), and the AFA was fined $321,000 (£235,000) in total, with $100,000 (£73,000) earmarked for anti-discrimination initiatives and a further $100,000 (£73,000) suspended. The case followed altercations between Argentina and Spain players and staff after the final whistle in New Jersey, as well as a banner asserting Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands displayed after the semi-final win over England. Spain's Gavi and Argentina's Thiago Almada each received one-match bans and $30,000 fines, while Argentina coaching staff member Roberto Ayala was banned for three matches and fined $30,000.
