## Key points

- Man arrested near Trump's California golf course with illegal weapons
- Suspect Jeanine John Taele, 38, also wanted for a robbery
- Home raid found more weapons; federal charges and court date pending

## Summary

US authorities have arrested a man found carrying a concealed pistol and illegal ammunition near Donald Trump's California golf course, days before the president attended a Republican fundraising dinner there. Jeanine John Taele, 38, was detained on Sunday at the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes after being seen photographing the grounds and appearing to monitor security preparations; he was also wanted in connection with a separate robbery. The FBI called the case serious given past attempts on Trump's life, though officials said no credible threat to the wider community had been identified.

Taele was found with a concealed pistol and a high-capacity magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition, both illegal under California's strict gun laws, and faces state charges of carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition, plus a federal charge over an unregistered short-barrelled rifle carrying a maximum 10-year sentence. A subsequent raid on his Downey home uncovered an illegally modified rifle, a pistol, body armour, further high-capacity magazines and notebooks containing "concerning statements". He is due to appear in federal court as early as Thursday, and investigators, working with the Secret Service, say further charges may follow. Trump's visit, which included a speech criticising California Governor Gavin Newsom, went ahead as planned.
