## Key points

- Army chiefs propose 10,000 more soldiers over three years.
- The expansion is estimated to cost £800 million.
- The plans come amid warnings about Russia and Nato security.

## Summary

The British Army is drawing up plans to recruit 10,000 additional soldiers over three years, as defence officials warn the UK should be ready for possible conflict within about 1,000 days. The proposed expansion reflects concerns about Russia’s threats to Nato allies and comes as ministers face pressure to explain how they will raise defence spending.

The plan is estimated to cost £800 million and would also provide new weapons and body armour; sources say it is expected to be submitted to the Government for approval in the New Year. The Army has around 75,000 soldiers, its smallest number since the early 19th century, with about 8,000 reportedly unable to fight for medical reasons. It is also said to be rejecting about 200 applicants a day, many on medical grounds.
