AstroLab firmware update adds deep editing and 67 new patches

The Verge ·

Arturia has released version 2.0 of its AstroLab firmware, transforming the stage keyboards from preset browsers into proper sound design instruments. Previously, users could only lightly tweak sounds using four macro controls; now a new Sound Edit menu allows access to individual instrument parameters for genuine customisation. This addresses a significant limitation that had left the AstroLab trailing some competitors in sound design capabilities.

The update includes 67 new patches and a suite of multisampled acoustic instruments: pianos, strings, and brass sections that improve the keyboard's instrument library. Though the Sound Edit tools require navigation through menus and the hardware's four macro knobs limit real-time tweaking, creating custom sounds is now straightforward for users willing to invest the time. Additional improvements include octave LED transposition display, more responsive aftertouch, and allegedly more reliable app connectivity. The AstroLab 2.0 update is available free to all existing owners.

The AstroLab is a stage keyboard made by Arturia that provides sounds and instruments for live performance and studio use. It comes equipped with factory-installed sounds that users can select and play.

Before this update, users could only adjust these sounds in a limited way, using a small number of control knobs. This restricted the keyboard's capabilities compared to some competing instruments, preventing significant changes to the factory sounds.

The latest update opens up deeper control over the sounds themselves. Users can now access the underlying settings that define each sound, allowing for the kind of thorough modification that was previously not available.
