Following Dolly Parton's death on 25 August, a Change.org petition has called for Nashville International Airport to be renamed in her honour, and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has since announced plans to work with the airport towards making this happen. The Metro Nashville Airport Authority is due to discuss the proposal on 17 September, though it would need to waive its usual rules requiring a two-year wait after death and a demonstrable connection to aviation before any change could proceed.

Should the renaming go ahead, Parton would become only the second musician in the United States, and one of a small number worldwide, to have an airport named after them. Others honoured this way include Louis Armstrong (New Orleans, the only current US example), John Lennon (Liverpool, renamed in 2002), Frédéric Chopin (Warsaw), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Salzburg), Antonio Carlos Jobim (Rio de Janeiro), Franz Liszt (Budapest), Sergei Prokofiev, Astor Piazzolla, Henryk Wieniawski, Leoš Janáček and Cesária Évora, with these tributes typically arriving years, and sometimes decades, after the musician's death.
