At least 11 killed in second Russian strikes on Kyiv in a week

BBC World · 2 days ago

Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv on Monday killed at least 11 people and injured approximately 46, including five children. Residential apartment buildings across two districts sustained direct hits, with three structures partially collapsing. Rescue operations continued at more than 20 locations as emergency crews worked to extract survivors from the rubble.

The assault represented the second round of intensive bombing in a week, following Thursday strikes that killed at least 30 people. Zelensky had forewarned of the attack based on intelligence reports. The strikes coincided with a NATO summit in Turkey where Ukraine's president was scheduled to meet with the US President. Russia characterised its actions as responses to Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure, whilst Ukraine maintained that Russia deliberately targeted civilian areas. Ukraine has been intensifying its military operations against Russian-occupied Crimea to pressure negotiations, with Zelensky appealing for accelerated air defence deliveries from Western allies.
