An explosion has killed at least two people at a military barracks in Viacha, Bolivia, roughly 30km from La Paz, with authorities warning the death toll could rise significantly. The blast, caused by detonating "pyrotechnic material" stored at the base, has left dozens injured and damaged homes in the surrounding area, prompting an investigation and a period of civic mourning.

Bolivia's Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano said at least 58 people were injured when the material exploded around 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT) on Friday at the barracks, which houses an artillery regiment. A health official said between 10 and 15 people were believed to have died, though this is unconfirmed pending further searches of the rubble. Police said fireworks had reportedly been stored at the site, and officials urged residents to stay at least 150m away due to the risk of further explosions. Viacha's authorities have declared three days of mourning.
