Atletico Madrid have agreed a £34.2m (€40m) deal to sign Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, with Spurs retaining a 15% sell-on clause. The prospective transfer would deprive Tottenham of a central defensive leader after they narrowly avoided Premier League relegation, while helping Atletico strengthen following a fourth-place finish in La Liga.
The 28-year-old Argentina international is expected to become Atletico’s fourth summer signing and would take their spending beyond £100m. Romero made 156 appearances and scored 13 goals across five seasons with Spurs; Arsenal had recently shown interest, but Tottenham did not want to sell him to their north London rivals.

Cristian Romero is an Argentine central defender who has played for Tottenham Hotspur since 2021 and has also been part of Argentina’s national team. He became Tottenham captain and has been one of the team’s most experienced defenders, making more than 150 appearances for the club.
Atlético Madrid are one of Spain’s leading clubs, based in the capital and regular competitors in European football. They are managed by Diego Simeone, another Argentine, and are seeking to strengthen their squad after finishing fourth in Spain’s top division last season.
Tottenham and Arsenal are major rivals from north London, so transfers between them can be particularly sensitive. A sell-on clause means Tottenham would receive a share of any future fee if Atlético later sells Romero to another club.
