Kino Lorber has released the first trailer for "Atonement," a war drama from director Reed Van Dyk starring Kenneth Branagh, Boyd Holbrook and Hiam Abbass. The film will premiere in a Gala Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival before its theatrical release on 2 October, and it tackles the human cost of the Iraq War through themes of guilt, forgiveness and reconciliation.

The story follows the Khachaturian family, displaced from their Baghdad home during the early days of the Iraq War, who become caught in a firefight between US Marines and insurgents after a Marine's split-second decision devastates them. Years later, that Marine, Lou (Holbrook), seeks reconciliation with the family's matriarch, aided by a journalist character played by Branagh. The film is based on a 2012 New Yorker article by Dexter Filkins, and both Branagh and Abbass have spoken of being drawn to the story's themes of forgiveness amid the "barbarity" of conflict.
