An Australian boxing trainer, Michael Sacatides, has been deported to Sydney from Bali nearly 16 years after his arrest for smuggling methamphetamine, following the completion of his sentence and parole period. The case highlights Indonesia's tough stance on foreign nationals involved in drug offences, with authorities confirming Sacatides may now face a lifetime ban from re-entering the country.

Sacatides, 59, was arrested in October 2010 at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport after customs officers found around 1.7kg of methamphetamine hidden in his suitcase following a flight from Bangkok. He was convicted at Denpasar District Court and sentenced to 18 years, despite denying knowledge of the drugs, and served time across several prisons, including Kerobokan, alongside members of the Bali Nine and Schapelle Corby. His sentence was later cut by over three years and he was granted parole in 2023, but an expired passport delayed his deportation until he was placed on a flight home on Friday.
