An 81-year-old man has been charged after allegedly attempting to shoot a 23-year-old at a car repair shop in Hoppers Crossing, west of Melbourne, before making a slow-motion getaway that has since gone viral. CCTV footage of the incident, obtained by local outlet Wyndham TV, shows the elderly man shuffling to an old Ford Falcon and driving off at walking pace, prompting comparisons online to Clint Eastwood's character in the film Gran Torino. The case has drawn widespread attention partly because of the incongruity between the alleged violence and the sedate nature of the escape, though it triggered a significant police response including the deployment of the air wing.

The alleged attack took place at BBL Auto First on Hammer Court on 4 August, with police claiming the man tried to fire several times at his victim, though the weapon reportedly failed to discharge. He was later located and arrested nearby on Industrial Avenue without incident and has been charged with making threats to kill and firearms offences; he appeared in Wyndham Magistrates' Court on 5 August and is due back next month. Nobody was physically hurt, though the business said the episode had a psychological impact, and it strongly denied online speculation linking the alleged attack to customer disputes. Victoria Police has declined to comment further while the matter remains before the courts.
