An Australian high school teacher, Michael Keats, has died in devastating flooding in Nepal, prompting tributes from his school community and grieving relatives. Keats, a support teacher from Mollymook on the New South Wales South Coast, was returning from a trek of Mount Kailash in Tibet when flash floods struck the region last Wednesday, and his death was confirmed online by loved ones on Monday evening.

Moruya High School's relieving principal Glenn Grimmond paid tribute to Keats in a letter to parents, saying his loss would be deeply felt by students and staff. His partner, Emily Boyd, has raised more than $36,000 through a fundraiser to help his sisters travel to India for a spiritual ritual in his honour, with some proceeds also going to Nepalese flood victims. At least 43 Australians remain missing, while Nepalese authorities have confirmed 919 deaths and 4,793 people missing across the Nepal-Tibet border, with the Royal Australian Air Force deploying humanitarian aid to the region.
