An Australian truck driver, Simon Peter Carman, aged 45 from Perth, has made his first court appearance charged with the murder of a 17-year-old Thai girl, Tunchanok Donhomla, also known as Cake. Her naked body was discovered in a black suitcase near railway tracks on the outskirts of Pattaya on 27 June, two days after she was last seen alive with Carman. The case has drawn international attention as Carman faces potential capital punishment under Thai law, having been arrested at Bangkok airport whilst attempting to board a flight back to Australia.

The 45-year-old has pleaded not guilty to four charges including murder, concealing a corpse, and abducting a minor for indecent purposes, claiming he acted in self-defence during a struggle over money, alleging the teenager attacked him with a knife. An autopsy revealed Tunchanok died from suffocation and brain injury, with DNA evidence linking Carman to the scene. The teenager had travelled approximately 600 kilometres from northern Thailand to Pattaya nine days before her death for a holiday; she met Carman on Jomtien Beach in the early hours of 25 June. Prosecutors argue he subsequently suffocated her and disposed of her body in the suitcase. His bail application was rejected, and the case will next be heard in court on 12 October.
