Australia boss Walters appointed Saints head coach

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

St Helens have announced that Australia head coach Kevin Walters will take over as their head coach from 2027, signing a three-year contract with the Super League club. The 58-year-old will continue leading the Kangaroos through the home World Cup in October and November before making the switch, marking what chairman Eamonn McManus called "a major statement of ambition" for both the club and Super League.

Walters, who guided Australia to a 3-0 Ashes series win over England last year, has previous Super League experience with Catalans Dragons and has also coached Queensland and NRL side Brisbane Broncos. As a player he won six NRL Premierships and represented Australia in the 1992 World Cup triumph. Saints, currently seventh in the table with three games left and at risk of missing the play-offs for the first time, parted ways with Paul Rowley in July after less than a year in charge; interim coach Eamon O'Carroll will remain in post until the end of this season.
