An insurer's analysis has named Plenty Road in Melbourne's north-east as Australia's most dangerous stretch for car crashes, based on AAMI's Crash Index Decade of Driving report. Drawing on 4.3 million motor claims lodged between 2014 and 2023, the report ranks the country's worst crash hotspots and highlights how targeted road-safety measures can reduce accidents.

AAMI said Plenty Road topped the list, followed by the Hume Highway at Liverpool in New South Wales, the Bruce Highway in Queensland, the Albany Highway in Western Australia, Canberra Avenue in the ACT, Marion Road in South Australia, Sandy Bay Road in Tasmania and the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory. Motor claims manager Leah James noted that a 2022 speed-reduction trial on Plenty Road, informed by AAMI's data, cut accidents by 26 per cent, and that all the hotspots except Sandy Bay Road have held their positions for more than five of the past ten years.
