Variety has published a breakdown of the 2026 Emmy nominations in the writing and directing categories, arguing that they are dominated by "auteurs" and showrunners — creators who both write and direct, and often star in, their own shows. Five figures earned nominations in both writing and directing for series work: Lucia Aniello ("Hacks"), Vince Gilligan ("Pluribus"), Steven Conrad ("DTF St. Louis"), Lee Sung Jin ("Beef") and Brad Ingelsby ("Task"). Female directors featured strongly across drama, documentary and variety, with Salli Richardson Whitfield becoming the first Black woman to receive two directing nominations in the same category in one year, for "The Gilded Age" and "Task". In comedy writing, four of six nominees were also stars of their shows, including Quinta Brunson, Tim Robinson, Lisa Kudrow and Paul W. Downs, while documentary nods went to films on subjects such as Mel Brooks, Sean Combs and Martin Scorsese.
