Baldur’s Gate 3 players on PC can’t decide if the latest third-person camera mod is a revelation or a crime against Larian’s original vision

A modder has released a "true third-person camera" for Baldur's Gate 3, reigniting a long-running debate among PC players over whether the isometric RPG should support an over-the-shoulder viewpoint similar to games like Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space. The mod, created by Relysia, has proven unexpectedly popular and prompted strong reactions online, with some praising its polish and others arguing it fundamentally undermines the artistic vision Larian Studios built the game around.

Uploaded to Nexus Mods on 20th July, the mod has already surpassed 6,400 unique downloads and spread widely across social media via gameplay clips. Critics on X argued that, unlike Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3 was designed from the ground up with an isometric camera in mind, making a genuine third-person mode a poor fit, while supporters countered that Larian should consider such options, noting the feature would be optional. The game already offers a rough approximation of third-person play when heavily zoomed in with a gamepad, though Larian has never officially pursued the mode. The debate comes as the studio's next project, Divinity, is said to build on Baldur's Gate 3's foundations while moving away from Dungeons & Dragons rules, leaving open the possibility of new camera options in future titles.
