Australian tourist Sean Duncan Millar, 50, has had a drug-trafficking charge dropped by a Balinese court, reducing his potential punishment from life imprisonment to a proposed two-year sentence for personal drug use. The case highlights Indonesia’s strict drug laws and the severe consequences faced by visitors, even where authorities allege possession of a small quantity.

Police say they found 0.6 grams of methamphetamine, a glass pipe, a bong and a mobile phone during an April raid on Millar’s guesthouse in West Denpasar. Millar admitted using drugs but denied trafficking; his lawyer said he should receive rehabilitation, citing the death of his daughter, while prosecutors pointed to his conduct during the trial and admission of wrongdoing. A further hearing is scheduled for next week.
