The striker had signed a deal sheet shortly before 11pm, but pulled out after questions were raised by Everton's medical staff, sparking a dispute between the two clubs over who was responsible for the collapse. Scuro also defended Monaco's decision to renege on a separate £47m deal to sell Lamine Camara to Chelsea once it became clear the Balogun-Everton deal was back on.

Everton sources claim Balogun arrived late from France and that Monaco were slow sharing medical records, while Scuro insists Everton's medical team raised unjustified doubts that unsettled the player and leaked to the press within half an hour. Chelsea, seeking a replacement for Manchester City-bound Enzo Fernández, had a written agreement in place for Camara, but Monaco called it off once Everton confirmed around 10pm that they were proceeding with Balogun.
