BBC to broadcast Kabul drama about Afghan evacuation

The BBC has acquired Kabul, a drama series set during the 2021 withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and the subsequent evacuation from Kabul. Due to air next month, it portrays the Taliban’s entry into the city through the experience of an Afghan family and international officials, placing a recent humanitarian and political crisis at the centre of the story; it is also among the last productions to feature Eric Dane.
Produced by Mediawan for the European Alliance of broadcasters, including ZDF, Rai and France Télévisions, the series follows the Nazany family as it attempts to escape feared reprisals amid the threat of an ISIS attack. French police officers, Italian diplomats, German military personnel and US intelligence services attempt to coordinate the evacuation, while Dane plays Martin alongside Darina Al Joundi, Shervin Alenabi, Hannah Abdoh and others. It was directed by Kasia Adamik and Olga Chajdas, and written by Olivier Demangel, Thomas Finkielkraut and Joey Lavy.

Afghanistan is a country in South and Central Asia that was governed by the Taliban from the late 1990s until a US-led invasion removed the group after the 11 September 2001 attacks. The Taliban then fought the Afghan government and its international allies for two decades.
In 2021, the United States and its allies withdrew their remaining forces from Afghanistan. The Taliban rapidly took control of much of the country, including the capital, Kabul, prompting many Afghans and foreign nationals to seek evacuation.
The evacuation involved military forces, diplomats and aid workers from several countries, alongside Afghan civilians trying to leave. It became more urgent because many people feared retaliation from the Taliban, while the Islamic State group’s Afghan branch also carried out attacks during the period.
