## Key points

- BBC has plans for emergency FM broadcasts during a prolonged communications outage.
- Government advice is to keep three days of essential supplies at home.
- Retailers reported sharp rises in sales of tinned food and radios.

## Summary

The BBC has prepared plans to keep emergency radio broadcasts running if a major UK crisis cuts off communications, including the internet, for three days or more. The service would give households practical guidance during disruption, while the plans reflect wider calls for people and public services to prepare for emergencies.

The BBC says its broadcasts would use FM transmitters with diesel-powered generators, and its teams would rely on satellite phones and agreed meeting points if those failed. Government advice asks households to keep three days of food and drinking water, a battery or wind-up FM radio, and some cash; reported weekend sales of tinned food at Iceland rose by 40%, while radio sales at Robert Dyas rose by 160%.
