Labour MP Lauren Edwards has urged young people to be careful about what they post on social media, restating an apology for a series of offensive tweets she made in her twenties. Edwards, who is leading efforts to legalise assisted dying after the previous attempt ran out of parliamentary time, said she was speaking from personal experience, warning that ill-considered online comments can "really store up problems" and be misinterpreted later in life.

Shortly after being elected in 2024, Edwards apologised for now-deleted posts from 2009-2011 in which she made remarks about Estonians, a halal restaurant and parliamentary cleaners, including using the word "retards" in one message. She told the Press Association she "wholeheartedly" apologises, attributing the language partly to attitudes of the time, and said she now tries to act as an advocate for disabled people. She also revealed she has largely disengaged from social media since becoming an MP and avoids reading coverage of herself. Separately, she discussed the pressure of fronting the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which returns to the Commons on 11 September, saying she felt a duty to those seeking assisted dying reform despite the scrutiny involved.
