Bentley is preparing to launch its 2027 Torcal, an electric SUV built on the same platform as the electrified Porsche Cayenne, marking the brand's continued push into the luxury EV market alongside rivals such as Rolls-Royce's Spectre and Cadillac's Celestiq. The Verge's reporter was given an early ride in a heavily disguised preproduction model ahead of its official unveiling later this month, finding a spacious cabin, smooth ride and strong attention to craftsmanship, all in keeping with Bentley's traditional identity despite the shift to electric power.

Engineers went beyond the brand's usual two-chamber air suspension by fine-tuning oil flow through adaptive dampers, making the difference between Comfort and Sport modes more noticeable while keeping the ride consistently smooth, and paid particular attention to steering alignment. To preserve a sense of authenticity, Bentley also developed a simulated engine sound inspired by its V8-powered 1980s Turbo R, recorded using a musician's drum beat rather than a synthesised track, aiming to replicate the subtle imperfections of a real combustion engine. Product line director Martin Page said the goal throughout was to maintain craftsmanship both in materials and in the execution of the car's digital features.
