The US State Department has revoked the visa of Taif Sami Mohammed, a former senior Iraqi finance official who received the Biden administration’s International Women of Courage Award in 2022. The case marks a sharp reversal in Washington’s treatment of Mohammed and is politically significant because the Trump administration has portrayed it as part of a tougher approach to suspected terrorism.

Mohammed was previously praised by then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken for anti-corruption work while serving as Iraq’s deputy finance minister and budget director, before later becoming finance minister. Republican lawmakers Joe Wilson and Greg Steube had accused her of enabling terrorist funding and called for sanctions, but those allegations have not been detailed in the State Department’s statement. Separately, an Iraqi court reportedly placed her on a wanted list during a corruption investigation into former officials; that action is investigative and does not establish wrongdoing.
