BIFF BYFORD On Upcoming SAXON Album: ‘It’s Heavier, More Than Anything’
SAXON frontman Biff Byford has confirmed to Classic Rock magazine that the British heavy metal band's 25th studio album is complete and tentatively scheduled for release on 22 January 2027 via Silver Lining Music. Byford described the record as "heavier, more than anything" — offering his own take on drummer Nigel Glockler's characterisation of it as "more groove-oriented" — and revealed that two videos have been shot, with pre-orders opening in September, though he joked he was not supposed to disclose these details.
The album, a follow-up to 2024's "Hell, Fire And Damnation", again features songwriting from newer guitarist Brian Tatler (also of Diamond Head), whom Byford said contributes roughly equally alongside Doug Scarratt. Longtime producer Andy Sneap has finished mixing the record. Alongside the album, SAXON have announced the UK and Ireland leg of their "Gods Of Thunder" world tour, reviving their 30-foot mechanised Eagle stage prop (absent only in Cardiff due to venue limits) and the "Castles & Eagles" production. The news comes after a difficult period for Byford, who completed chemotherapy for bowel cancer last October, following earlier heart procedures in 2019 and 2024.
