Big brewers ‘misleading drinkers’ over craft beer credentials, says Camra

The Guardian · 2 days ago

A trade group representing beer enthusiasts has released findings suggesting that major global breweries use deceptive marketing to present themselves as craft producers whilst obscuring their true origins. Their research documents that four multinational brewing corporations manufacture seven of the country's ten most popular beers branded as craft, naming specific examples including Beavertown, Camden Town, and Meantime.

Beyond branding concerns, the organisation contends that these corporations exploit their ownership of or financial relationships with pubs to ensure their products receive preferential shelf space whilst independent brewers struggle for distribution. The group has requested that the nation's competition authority examine whether anti-competitive conduct is restricting market access, and highlighted examples of brands presented to consumers with false geographic associations, such as a beer marketed as Spanish but actually produced in northern England.
