## Key points

- Maher addressed Trump’s lengthy online criticism on *Real Time*.
- He disputed claims about their calls and the White House dinner.
- Trump’s 1,318-word post also called the dinner a good meeting.

## Summary

Bill Maher responded on *Real Time* to President Donald Trump’s lengthy social media attack following their recent White House dinner. Maher said he had hoped the dinners would allow them to talk and disagree without personal animosity, and argued that Trump’s public comments showed he had misrepresented or overlooked things Maher had said.

Maher read parts of Trump’s post aloud and disputed claims that he had called Trump repeatedly or invited himself to the White House. He also joked about Trump calling him a “major POTHEAD” and cited clips to counter the claim that he opposed removing Iran’s nuclear weapon. Trump’s 1,318-word post criticised Maher, his programme and producer Chuck LaBella, while also describing the dinner as a good meeting.
