Sir Ian Wood, the Scottish billionaire businessman and philanthropist best known for building his family's fishing business into the global energy services giant Wood Group, has died at the age of 84. He was one of the most prominent figures in Aberdeen's oil and gas industry and was widely regarded as a leading voice on the future of the North Sea sector, as well as a major benefactor to Scottish education, regeneration and charitable causes.

Wood built Wood Group from a small family firm into a multinational engineering and services company serving the oil and gas industry worldwide, amassing significant wealth in the process. In later life he stepped back from the business to focus on philanthropy through the Wood Foundation, funding initiatives in education, economic development and charitable projects in Scotland and overseas, and he was knighted in recognition of his contribution to industry and public life.
