Billy Ray Cyrus Says Miley Dropping Last Name Is a “Natural Progression for an Iconic Superstar Legend”

The Hollywood Reporter · 5 hours ago

Billy Ray Cyrus has publicly backed his daughter Miley Cyrus's decision to drop her surname professionally, calling it a "natural progression for an iconic superstar legend" as she prepares to promote her new album. The move comes as Miley shifted her social media presence to use just "Miley" ahead of Tuesday's announcement of her 10th studio record, and it follows a period of estrangement between father and daughter that has since given way to reconciliation.

Writing on X, Billy Ray noted he had always called his daughter simply "Miley" within the family and drew comparisons to single-name icons such as Dolly Parton, Cher, Elvis Presley and Prince. He also revealed he performed under just "Cyrus" before his 1992 hit "Achy Breaky Heart" launched his career. The new album, titled Bass Persuades, is set for release on 18 September, and Miley has also announced two shows at the Hollywood Bowl on 16 and 18 October.
